Funding your Studies

First, some definitions:

Graduate’ in the UK means the same thing as ‘undergraduate’ schooling in the US (ie: earning your Bachelors degree).
Postgraduate’ in the UK means the same thing as ‘graduate’ schooling or ‘grad school’ in the US (ie: Masters degree).
Uni’ means ‘university’ or ‘college’.

Funding your studies abroad can be a harrowing experience. In general, UK schools are cheaper than their US counterparts and just as good. However the current USD/GBP exchange rate makes things a bit more expensive than they seem.

A year of undergraduate school (what is called in the UK ‘graduate’ school) can cost £3000 which is around $6000US – still much cheaper than a year of undergrad would cost in the States. But fee’s vary widely depending on your program.

Are there scholarships specifically for Americans who are studying in the UK? Yes. There are two:

  • The Fulbright Scholarship – prestigious and hard to get. Try anyway. The experience of applying for such a high-level award is fun in itself.
  • The Marshall Scholarship – to apply you must not have graduated from undergrad less than three years ago.

Those are the only scholarships I have found specifically for Americans studying overseas. Don’t forget to check out the other ones – like the ones specifically geared to your degree. And of course,
US Federal Student Loans can also be used for study at schools in the UK.
